What We Loved (and what blows) from the First Half of 2020

LOVED

Outer Banks: Season 1 (Netflix)

The other day, someone mentioned to me how they had just cancelled their trip to the Outer Banks in August. I immediately responded, but not with “why were you going?”, “that’s too bad,” or even “did you reschedule?” Nope. Instead I said, “HAVE YOU SEEN THE SHOW?!?!” They had, and when they asked me why I liked it so much, I didn’t even have a straight answer. I just really, really like it, and apparently it’s for no reason. But I don’t care because, yes, I would die for John B.

Harley Quinn: Season 2 (DC Universe)

Cartoons! R-Rated adult cartoons! Season 2 this Spring was amazing, but Season 1 was in the fall and was equally as amazing. Harley Quinn is hysterical, playing off of the hype train surrounding the character. It’s also great seeing this show make fun of literally every Batman movie ever made, nothing better than Bane constantly speaking in a very exaggerated “Bane voice.” I encourage everyone to give this one a shot. It’ll be on HBOMax soon, so you don’t have to buy DC Universe.1

Ozark: Season 3 (Netflix)

The third season of Ozark was WILD. Loved every second of it. Talk about a turnaround because the second season is a total turd. Whenever something from season two is referenced in season three, it’s so easy to go, “ohhh yeahhhh” because you forgot about it. Because season two is very forgettable. But season three is so good that I would say it’s actually worth sitting through season two. The payoff is that good.

Oh, and if Tom Pelphrey doesn’t get multiple golden statues for his acting this season, we riot.

BLOWS

To All the Boys 2: P.S I Still Love You (Netflix)

Hahahahaha. This movie sucks. It was very disappointing considering that the first movie in the series is actually pretty great. I tried to explain what happens to Sham in this movie after watching it, but that was the problem. Literally nothing noteworthy happens. Seems like a placeholder for the third leg of the trilogy, which I really hope doesn’t blow… because obviously I’m going to watch it.

Westworld: Season 3 (HBO)

The first season of Westworld is really good. Intriguing, suspenseful, surprising! Everything you could want. The second season is terrible. I won’t speak any more of it. But then they added Aaron Paul for the third season, teased life outside of the park and it felt promising. Now while I will admit that there are two or three episodes in the middle of the season that were very good, the season as a whole was just kind of… meh. One of these days, writers are going to realize that the “AI taking over the world” storyline is played out.

Love Life (HBOMax)

Anna Kendrick = Amazing

Love Life = Blows

Watch it? How much do you like Anna Kendrick?

  1. DC Universe has arguably the worst user interface in the history of streaming applications. IT BLOWS
