TMB’s 2023 Oscar Preview and Complete 2022 Movie Rankings!

It’s about that time of year! The Oscars are this Sunday night and I haven’t even released my 2022 movie rankings yet. To be fair, I had been waiting to see a couple more movies, specifically The Fablemans and The Whale. I saw The Fablemans on Sunday, finally, but still not The Whale. Maybe if I could rent it… but I refuse to buy it for $20. It’s the principal of the thing.

So here’s what we’re going to do. I’m going to run through the Oscars, give some predictions, and finish up with the list of my 2022 rankings. It’s 90 movies and I just don’t have the time to discuss them all so I’m just listing them. Want to debate? Questions? Twitter’s always open. Onto the Oscars!

The Oscars

I have been slacking the past few years in seeing all the Oscar movies, but I got up to six of the Best Picture nominees this year. I would say it was a pretty decent year? Lots of variety and several great movies. Although, if you didn’t know already, the Oscars are my mortal enemy. The movies and actors I want to win NEVER do and I just end up frustrated 90% of the time. I’m feeling like that will probably be the case yet again, so for the four acting awards and Best Picture, I will be listing who I want to win, who I think should win, and who I think will win. Before that, let’s talk about a few other awards.

Best Original Song: Pretty popular group this year with Rihanna and Lady Gaga being nominated each for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Top Gun: Maverick respectively, but all signs to Naatu Naatu running away with this for RRR. Haven’t seen the movie… or heard the song, but I’m sure it’s great!

Best Animated Feature: Maybe for the first time ever, I’ve seen zero of the five nominees in this category. From what I’ve heard, this is a runaway for Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinnochio. Pixar got in it’s annual nominee though! Not Lightyear, boy did that underwhelm.

Best Original Screenplay: I’m sure all of these screenplays are great, but The Banshees of Inisherin script is incredible. It shouldn’t be a conversation, it’s that good.

Best Director: I don’t have a strong opinion here, but I bet this is one of the years where the Best Director and Picture winners are from different movies.

Moving onto the acting categories!

Best Supporting Actress:

Who I want to win: Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin
Who should win: Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin
Who will win: Angela Basset, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

I truly think Kerry Condon should take this award home, but the Academy is probably going with Bassett or Jamie Lee Curtis here. Bassett is deserving and I’ll be thrilled if the MCU takes home its first acting award as she was really great in Black Panther. Curtis was good, but just wasn’t in the same ballpark IMO.

Best Supporting Actor:

Who I want to win: Barry Keoghan, The Banshees of Inisherin
Who should win: Ke Huy Quan, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
Who will win: Ke Huy Quan, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once

As much as I selfishly want Barry Keoghan to win, Quan is taking the Oscar here. He deserves it, way to go Short Round!

Best Actress:

Who I want to win: Meh
Who should win: Michelle Yeoh, EEAAO
Who will win: Cate Blanchett, TAR

Now I haven’t seen TAR, so it’s hard for me to say anything too much here, but I find myself not really caring who wins this one. Saying that, I know they were both great and Yeoh probably should win her first Oscar. Portraying multiple versions of a character deserves some credit, but the Academy LOVES Cate Blanchett. So I bet this one goes to her yet again.

Best Actor:

Who I want to win: Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin
Who should win: ….
Who will win: Brendan Fraser, The Whale

This is where I wish I had seen The Whale. Who should win? I’m really not sure. Between what I’ve heard and the type of role he played, I would guess that Fraser will win this one. But this is a toss up for sure as Austin Butler could sneak away with it also… despite my thoughts on Elvis

Best Picture:

Before we dive in, here are my personal rankings of the Best Picture nominees:

  1. Top Gun: Maverick
  2. The Banshees of Inisherin
  3. The Fablemans
  4. Avatar: The Way of Water
  5. Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
  6. Elvis

Haven’t Seen

  • TAR
  • All Quiet on the Western Front
  • Triangle of Sadness
  • Women Talking

Of the six nominees I saw, I generally thought they were all great. except Elvis. That was trash. Austin Butler was great in the role, but boy I did not like that movie. Moving on from that, this could go a bunch of different ways. My predictions:

Who I want to win: Top Gun: Maverick
Who should win: The Banshees of Inisherin
Who will win: The Fablemans

Let’s be serious, Top Gun isn’t going to win Best Picture. I want it to so bad, but it’s not what the Academy chooses. Same goes for Avatar (which I really, really liked btw). This leads to my problem with EEAAO. It’s a blockbuster superhero movie, yet somehow they have fooled everyone that it isn’t just because it’s an A24 movie. There’s more slow motion in the last 20 minutes then there is in the original Suicide Squad… like what are we talking about here? I trust in the Academy to recognize that and not give them the award.

This leaves Banshees and Fablemans, and while both could realistically win, the Academy is going to go with old reliable in Spielberg. How do they not pick a movie about SS as a kid making movies? Stinks for Banshees, but that’s what’s going to happen!
